Most roofs have a few gaps. Some are left during the build, some open up as timber shrinks and some are caused by storms or old repairs. In Deception Bay, salt air also rusts fixings and mesh, which widens gaps over time. A possum only needs a hole about the size of a fist, and a rat needs much less.
The crew we book finds the gaps by checking the roof line from outside and looking for daylight from inside the roof cavity. They pay close attention to the ridge, the gutter line, the fascia, the ends of metal sheets and any joins between old and new roof sections. Fur, greasy marks and chewed edges show which gaps are in use. They also check around downlights and the manhole from inside, where gaps can let smells through.

If a possum is still in the roof, the crew does not seal it inside. They close every gap except the main one, fit an exclusion door there and seal it once the possum is out. A possum shut inside a roof will damage the ceiling trying to get out, so the order matters.
